A Thematic Approach within a Chronological Framework

Each chapter is framed chronologically and organized thematically around significant events in world history, such as the building of the Silk Roads (Chapter 6) and the spread of the Black Death (Chapter 11). This streamlined discussion of time periods draws each region (including Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa) into chapters, seamlessly giving students the big picture across the globe. 

Pedagogy to Help Students Think Like Historians

Designed to be easy for students to read and to help them develop the skills they need to succeed on the AP® World History exam, this text features a suite of pedagogical and media tools built around Core Objectives, which are designed to guide students’ reading and to aid them and their instructor in assessing their understanding of the material and concepts. Each of the book’s 21 chapters begins with the innovative Before You Read This Chapter pedagogy, which highlights the Global Storylines and Core Objectives that students need to comprehend while reading the chapter. Comparison Flags appear in the margins throughout the chapter to remind students of the Core Objectives while they read and to help them begin to make comparisons and connections on their own. The After You Read This Chapter pedagogy includes Tracing the Global Storylines, which shows the impact of the chapter’s main storyline on each region of the world. The Thinking About Global Connections questions highlight major themes that unify the book’s global approach, and Study Questions place the chapter’s Key Terms into a historical context.  

Integrated Primary Sources

Going to the Source features at the end of each chapter invite students to compare five to seven primary source documents on a key theme from the chapter. The Questions for Analysis and Long Essay Question that appear at the end of each set of documents were developed with the historical thinking skills in mind. Many of them address the higher level, more challenging skills, such as historical argumentation, interpretation, and synthesis.  

INQUIZITIVE: Quizzing to Learn

InQuizitive, Norton’s new adaptive quizzing platform, uses interactive questions and guided feedback to motivate students to read and understand the text.
