The Infectious Disease Flashcards can be used to learn or memorize facts, but they can also be used to help you see and remember the relationships between facts and concepts. The process of learning these relationships makes it easier to master a subject and do better on the test. This deeper kind of learning can be achieved for microbiology with this set of flashcards.

The deck of cards includes information on 48 diseases that affect different body systems. One side of each card includes two photographs: one showing the disease agent itself and one showing the effect of the disease on the human body. The other side includes an organized summary of information about the disease.

Using the Flashcards

Start by sorting the cards. If your course is organized by body system, you can sort the cards by respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, and so on. If your course is organized by taxonomy, or types of organisms, you can sort the cards by bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Once the cards are sorted, review the information to make sure it matches your notes.

When you feel comfortable, start playing the games suggested here to help you see commonalities and differences between diseases. Using the flashcards in this way will cement the information in your memory and make it easier to remember during exams.

Game 1

Label a sheet of paper: Virus, Bacteria, Protozoan, and Other. Looking only at the image side of the cards, sort them into the appropriate category. Turn each of your piles over to check yourself.

Ask yourself:
What do the bacterial diseases have in common?
How are they different from viral diseases? How are they the same?
If diseases in the same pile have the same symptoms, how are the organisms different? Are their treatments different? How are they diagnosed?

Game 2

Sort the cards by any of these criteria:
Transmission, portal of entry, disease mechanism, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prevention.

Game 3

Working with a classmate, take turns picking a card off the deck and describing the mechanism of disease. Ask each other questions about toxins, affected organs, virulence (do people die from this disease?), and carriers.
