Ebook

Norton Ebooks give students and instructors an enhanced reading experience at a fraction of the cost of a print textbook. Students are able to have an active reading experience and can take notes, bookmark, search, highlight, and even read offline. As an instructor, you can even add your own notes for students to see as they read the text. Norton Ebooks can be viewed on—and synced among—all computers and mobile devices.

Smartwork5

Smartwork5 is an easy-to-use online assessment tool that helps students become better problem solvers through a variety of interactive question types and extensive answer-specific feedback. Get started quickly with our premade assignments or take advantage of Smartwork5’s flexibility by customizing questions and adding your own content. Integration with your campus LMS saves you time by allowing Smartwork5 grades to report right to your LMS gradebook, while individual and class-wide performance reports help you see students’ progress.

Coursepack

Easily add high quality Norton digital media to your online, hybrid, or lecture course—all at no cost. Norton Coursepacks work within your existing learning management system; there’s no new system to learn, and access is free and easy. Content is customizable and includes:

• Multiple-choice summary self-tests
• Explorations worksheets
• Learning Astronomy by Doing Astronomy pre- and post-activity questions
• Vocabulary flashcards
• AstroTours Animations
• Interactive Simulations
• Astronomy in Action Videos

The test bank is also available for download in LMS formats (Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, and Moodle). It is a separate download due to file size.

Interactive Simulations

NEW to the third edition, five new Interactive Simulations created by Stacy Palen help students play with variable relationships, allowing them to build their intuitive understanding of the topic at hand. The topics are:

• Lunar Phases
• Planetary orbits
• The H-R diagram
• The proton-proton chain
• The CNO cycle

Selected in-text Explorations activities use these simulations (replacing the Flash Nebraska Simulations that we used previously).

Astronomy in Action Videos

Our dynamic author Stacy Palen has created 23 videos on key topics that instructors can assign as pre-class activities via Smartwork5. A mixture of live demos and mini lectures explain key concepts in an understandable and compelling way. The accompanying Smartwork5 questions allow instructors to gauge student comprehension and adjust their lectures as the results suggest. No other text or online system offers mini-lectures or author activity demos on video.

AstroTour Animations

Norton’s 30 narrated AstroTour animations walk students through sometimes hard-to-grasp concepts like the phases of the moon or Hubble’s law. All are built on an Introduction-Explanation-Conclusion framework. Some include interactive elements. Many instructors like to deploy these via the Coursepack.

Learning Astronomy by Doing Astronomy: Collaborative Lecture Activities

Designed to foster in-classroom collaboration, this activity workbook includes 30 activities that span the introductory astronomy course. It is ideal for use in class, lab, or recitation. It can be packaged with the text for no additional cost. Pre- and post-activity quiz questions based on Learning Astronomy by Doing Astronomy can be found in the coursepack.

StarryNight Planetarium Software (College version) and Workbook

Norton has partnered with the makers of Starry Night, which is a realistic, and user-friendly planetarium simulation program. Starry Night allows students in urban areas to perform observational activities on a computer screen. Our unique accompanying workbook offers observation assignments that guide students’ virtual explorations and help them apply what they have learned from the text reading assignments. Note that each copy of the workbook contains a unique download code for the software.

Lecture PowerPoints with Quarterly Update Service

These ready-made lecture outlines include selected art from the text, clicker questions, and links to the AstroTours, Interactive Simulations, and Astronomy in Action Videos. Lecture notes for each chapter are provided in the notes pane.

To help instructors show that astronomical investigation and discovery is ongoing, we offer a quarterly update service that helps instructors bring new developments into the classroom.
