M. H. Abrams, Founding General Editor of the Norton Anthology of English Literature and the Norton Critical Editions, author of seminal works in literary criticism, and longtime professor at Cornell, where he taught Harold Bloom and Thomas Pynchon, marked his 100th birthday on July 23rd with a multi-day celebration at Cornell and a lecture based on the title-essay of his brand new book, The Fourth Dimension of a Poem and Other Essays, to be published by Norton on September 3. In the book, Abrams argues for a humanist approach to understanding poetry, stressing that poems are works by human beings for and about human beings.
