    Publicity Assistant

    W.W. Norton & Company, a distinguished book publishing firm, seeks an entry-level assistant for the publicity department at its New York headquarters. The position is available immediately.

    Although Norton may be most familiar to students for its Norton Anthologies, the firm publishes a wide variety of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry sold in general bookstores. Norton authors include Michael Lewis, Stephen Greenblatt, Judith Martin, Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz, Adrienne Rich, and many others. In recent years, Norton authors have won several National Book Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and many other honors. Founded in 1923, Norton is today the oldest and largest publishing house owned entirely by its employees.

    The Publicity Assistant position requires a bright, energetic, detail-oriented, highly organized person with superior writing and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. He or she must stay calm under pressure and prioritize quickly.

    The Publicity Assistant will report to the department’s Publicity Director and also work with the Associate Director. He or she will help at every stage of our publicity campaigns.

    Essential Job Responsibilities:

    • Assembling press materials and mailings

    • Fulfilling requests from the media

    • Updating data lists

    • Preparing and managing office distribution of book reviews

    • Researching media contacts

    • Writing and editing press materials

    • The assistant will also have the opportunity to handle some projects independently, schedule author interviews and events, and supervise department interns

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree

    • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.

    • Able to work full business hours from Norton’s NYC office

    • At least one year prior experience in an editorial environment

    • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communications skills

    • Must be able to anticipate needs and deliver timely, relevant solutions and actions

    • Must be able to develop rapport and relationships with all levels of employees

    • Must be seen as knowledgeable and capable of handling sensitive, critical information

    • Must be proactive, flexible and adaptive in a rapidly changing environment and adjust with a “can-do” attitude

    • Must be self-directed and independent

    • Must have good time management skills, be organized, and be capable of multi-tasking across departments, activities, and projects

    • Must be detail-oriented, making sure that all aspects of their daily activities are handled with accuracy, with minimal mistakes

    • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and database applications. Proficiency with Photoshop and InDesign a plus

    • Professional copyediting/proofreading training a plus

    • Mastery of email and calendar management tools, specifically Outlook
